I don't know what it is about John, but his songs seems to reach me like few other's do. Maybe it's the sly humor, or the feeling that you used to have a buddy who talked like that... The rich baritone voice, the laid-back phrasing, those little unexpected strums on the upbeats, they all contribute to a style perfectly matched to his world of optimistic losers and life's fringe dwellers.
